The Tuileries Garden is a French garden, the oldest in Paris. It was once part of the Tuileries Palace royal residence but is no longer there today. Its name comes from the neighborhood in which it is located, which were manufactured before ... tiles.
The Tuileries Gardens was formerly a Italian garden that Queen Catherine de Medici built along with the palace in the sixteenth century. It consisted of perpendicular aisles defining rectangular green space. She also built the orangery, designed to house the works of art.
In 1664, Jean-Baptiste Colbert was completely redesign the garden by André Le Nôtre. He established basins on either side of a large driveway. It was he who built the "terrace by the water" on the Quai des Tuileries, and the Feuillant currently along the Rue de Rivoli. We also added several statues, such as a group of characters from Greek mythology that is at the entrance to the Place de la Concorde.
