Paris: Champ de mars

Field of Mars is a park that borders the Eiffel Tower on one side and the military school in another. Many events are held during the year: concerts of popular stars, exhibitions, fireworks national holiday ...

Before the eighteenth century, the area was part of the countryside surrounding Paris. It grew vegetables ... In 1765, we built a military school, designed by architect Gabriel. The plain was turned into fields of operation. The ground was leveled and converted it walkways lined with elms. The park was surrounded by a moat and closed by a gate.

During the Revolution, was celebrated the feast of the Federation (14 July 1790) on the Champs de Mars: King Louis XVI accepted the constitution to an audience of 300,000 people. But it is also here a famous gunfight took place on 17 July 1791 as a crowd signed a petition demanding the end of the monarchy, the mayor of Paris declared martial law, ordering the soldiers shoot bystanders.
